Well, this could be huge—noted hacker and provocateur Stefan Esser (aka i0n1c) was on Twitter a few hours ago discussing iOS security holes opened up by the Absinthe jailbreak exploit. We have yet to see a widespread malware attack on Apple’s mobile devices, but a weakness like this—if indeed it is what Esser suggests—could be an open invitation to black hat hackers. And getting iOS users to download malware to their computers in the first place may be made easier by the plethora of sites devoted to all things Apple—especially since the targets will be people specifically looking to download themes and tweaks for their devices. One nice thought is that, should this turn out to be a serious problem, we might see fewer users willing to install pirated apps on their devices.

(Bear in mind, security holes in iOS are not new and this surely won’t be the last; as always, users themselves (through thoughtless behavior) are almost sure to be the cause of any problem.)

(With the release of today’s new 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak for iOS devices, I thought some new jailbreakers might get some good use from this past article. Enjoy!)

After several years of jailbreaking iPhones (and helping others jailbreak their devices), I’ve come to realize that Cydia—the third party app store that circumvents Apple’s lockdown on what can or can’t be installed on your iDevice—offers a lot of functionality that many users never explore (or were never aware of in the first place). Here, then, is a short list of some of Cydia’s most useful but overlooked features. Hopefully jailbreakers new and not-so-new alike will find something useful in them.
